Daubmann Appointed Director of Master of Science in Architecture

Dean Ponce de Leon has appointment Karl Daubmann, Associate Professor of Architecture, as Director of the Master of Science in Architecture degree.

As a pioneer in the area of digital technology in architectural design and fabrication, Daubmann and his work have been broadly disseminated and recognized. According to Dean Ponce de Leon, “Professor Daubmann brings a deep understanding of interdisciplinary collaboration and engagement with industry. This experience will be instrumental in positioning the specializations of the Master of Science in the context of current trends within the discipline and professional practice.”

As an architect, Daubmann maintains an active practice as principal of DAUB and co-principal of R+D LAB in Ann Arbor. From 2010 to 2013 Karl served as Creative Director and Vice-president of Design for BLU Homes. Prior to his appointment at BLU, he was partner and co-principal at PLY in Ann Arbor. Daubmann’s professional experience has gone beyond the conventional architectural practice, engaging with the building industry as well as collaborating with other disciplines in order to explore the changing role of architecture in society, as well as test the potentials of advanced digital fabrication and manufacturing in the construction of the built environment.

Daubmann has taught at the University of Michigan since the fall of 1999 when he arrived as the Williard D. Oberdick Teaching Fellow. He was appointed as Assistant professor in Architecture in 2002 and promoted to Associate Professor in 2008. Daubmann was instrumental in the inception of the FabLab and has been a strong voice in the development of the Master of Science concentration in Digital Technology.
