M.U.P. candidate Elias Schewel gives opening talk at University of Michigan TEDx

M.U.P. candidate Elias Schewel (MUP '12) will deliver the opening talk to this year"s University of Michigan TEDx held on March 29, 2012. Before joining the University of Michigan community in 2010, Schewel's work ranged from that of a neighborhood organizer for Philadelphia ACORN, to a research associate for environmental policy at Regional Plan Association in New York City, using geographic information systems as a policy analysis tool. At U-M, Schewel continues to focus on computer-based environmental and social modeling with a critical eye for how these technical processes can be made more dynamic, more democratic and become situated within an activist context. Schewel will give a talk about his work conducting independent "counter expertise" mapping analysis for coal-impacted communities in southern West Virginia, and the need for engineers to become organizers.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. For more information about TEDx at U-M: tedxuofm.com/
