Professor of Urban Planning Martin Murray Finalist for Herskovits Award

Professor of Urban Planning, Martin Murray, was recently announced as a finalist for the Herskovits Award presented by the African Studies Association for his book "City of Extremes: The Spatial Politics of Johannesburg".

The Herskovits Award is presented by the Africa Studies Association to the author of the most important scholarly work in African studies published in English during the preceding year. This annual award is named in honor of Melville J. Herskovits, one of the ASA's founders. The winner of the Herskovits Award is announced each year at the ASA Annual Meeting, where he or she receives an monetary honorarium.

Murray began his academic career as sociologist with a strong foundation in urban geography. His current research engages the fields of urban studies and planning, cultural geography, distressed urbanism, development, historical sociology, African studies, and transnational urbanism. Murray is also affiliated with the Department of African-American and African Studies (DAAS) in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts.
